Kroombit Tops Trip Report
Easter Long weekend
Friday 21st – Monday 24th March 08
The group consisting of trip leader Mark, Jo and Rob, Lucie and Ken, Helen and Anthony and all the kids left very early on Friday morning for an adventure that was never to be forgotten by some! We wound our way north to Calliope for a pit stop for both the cars and people. We were then ready for the expedition to the tops! Upon arrival we had to seek and find a camp site, but with the assistance of the trusty Rangers we found a great spot that was practically leach free. The rest of day 1 saw the groups finish setting up and building a fire to sit around in preparation for the chilly evening that was expected.
Day 2, arising from an eventful night (yes some thought the snoring from 2 of the tents were yeti’s attacking) we headed of the wreck of a World War II bomber. The drive led us to the site of the bomber were we had a walk to look at the remains, before heading to the wall for some morning tea. We then continued on the track, with a few stone flying when Rob forgot to lock in his hubs when making a steep ascent, and lizard man Mark chasing a few of his native brothers to show the kids. We then arrived back at camp at mid afternoon to light the fire. Anthony entertained the kids for a while playing a quiz game with the reward of a marshmallow if their question was answered correctly.
On Easter Sunday there was an Easter egg hunt for the kids – yes the Easter bunny even makes it to Kroombit Tops! After this we left for a trek to Cania Gorge. What else can we say BULLDUST, BULL...T, BULLDUST. Arrived at Monto for a cuppa at the reviver (ooops survivor) driver – after hrs in the dust it was well needed. We then headed off to Cania Gorge for a late lunch before heading back to the tops through more BULLSUDT, BULL…T, BULLDUST.
Day 4 – it was time to pack up and head for home. The girls insisted though that we had to have a look at the rainforest walk and the lookout before we headed down from the plateau. On the trip down we were stopped by a couple of feuding, randy bulls blocking the road. There was a massive display of male testosterone on the road and some would say there was also plenty in the cars with the boys cheering the bulls on! After this we headed for home with everyone arriving home safely early in the evening.
